Day 05: After breakfast this morning, you have a short drive along the coast, to the seaside town of Hermanus. This is where you'll stop for morning coffee - and be treated to the wonderful sight of an abundance of whales playing in the bay, right in front of your eyes! Winter is whale season and this is a sight not to be missed!
Then it's Safari Time! You head inlands, into the semi-desert area of the Klein Karoo, where you'll find one of South Africa's most exceptional safari secrets, Sanbona Private Game Reserve.
You'll experience two incredible nights of wildlife and nature heaven at Sanbona. You can choose from either of their two small and exclusive lodges, Tilney Manor and Khanni Lodge. Your stay includes all meals, two game (wildlife) viewing drives daily, safari walks in the bush with armed game rangers and all local beverages including beer, wine and soft drinks!
Sanbona Private Game Reserve
At the foot of the Warmwaterberg, in the heart of the Little Karoo, between Montagu and Barrydale on the famous Route 62, the vision of the San is becoming a reality. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, 54 000 hectares of undulating mountains and plains, indigenous fauna and flora, rock formations and rock art make this a destination not to be missed.
Specialist guiding is a key element in providing a memorable and varied experience. The name Sanbona is a combination of the "San" people who roamed this area for thousands of years and "bona" which represents their vision in order to position this portion of the Little Karoo.
Sanbona is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo). A historic predator release means that for the first time in over 200 years, lion and cheetah can once again be seen in the Klein Karoo, making Sanbona the first private game reserve in the Western Cape to play host to free-roaming big cats. This is one of the few places in the world where the rare white lion can be seen in its natural habitat. The sheer expanse and stark beauty of the Reserve gives one a sense of humbleness, the realization of the inconsequentialities of life, a temporary release of the daily stresses of everyday living and could be a deemed a profound spiritual experience. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve allows one to be at peace, allowing one to curl up with a book, seeking solitude and introspection.
Activities at Sanbona include game drives, nature walks, photography, birdwatching, rock formations, rock art, trout fishing, horseriding, hot air ballooning, stargazing - and the soul-enriching Wellness Centre.
Khanni Lodge
Sanbona's second lodge, Khanni, is named after the San word for Eland - a magnificent antelope revered by the San as ruler of the animal kingdom. Tucked away in a secluded valley overlooking a natural watering hole, Khanni Lodge is an idyllic Klein Karoo summer house, with wrap-around verandas, high lime-washed ceilings and exposed beams providing a feeling of cool, airy space. From the verandah and rim-flow swimming pool guests can watch animals visiting the watering hole to drink, and the private verandas of the lodge's four spacious suites offer exquisite views of the surrounding landscape.
Khanni Lodge provides guests with an enchanting choice of settings in which to relax - from the airy dining room and cosy lounge with its fireplace, to the outdoor dining patio and barbeque facilities.
You will have lunch at your Lodge and the afternoon is at leisure. Late this afternoon you will have their first game viewing drive in open safari vehicles, and your first opportunity to look out for the Big Five! A stop is made along the way for refreshments in the bush.
Return to your Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 06: This morning you have a very early wake-up call, and following coffee and tea, depart on the early morning game drive. (Game drives are always conducted early in the morning and in the late afternoon / evening as this is when the best game viewing takes place - during the heat of the day the animals retire into the shade and are not often visible.)
Return to your Lodge for breakfast, after which you are at leisure to relax by the pool and enjoy the African bushveld for the day. Sometimes the game rangers take guests on safari walks, to learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.
After late afternoon tea and coffee, the evening game drive departs to try and track down any types of animals you have not yet managed to see. Being wild animals free to roam the reserve, there is no guarantee what you might see, and this is part of the whole exciting experience!
Dinner and overnight at your Lodge.
Day 07: After a final early morning game drive and breakfast, today you sadly leave Sanbona, as you head towards sea, and the beautiful coastal area.
Whilst you will be staying in a very peaceful nature reserve, you are ideally placed to explore the many attractions and activities of the Garden Route - particularly the towns of Knysna and Tsistikamma. We have included two nights, to give you time to do this!
You're staying at five star Lake Pleasant Living, in a one-bedroom suite, on a bed and breakfast basis.

Overnight at Lake Pleasant Living.
Day 8: You have the full day at leisure today to explore! Here are some of the things you might like to do:
Knysna
You will definitely want to stop at Plettenburg Bay for morning coffee. The weather in this part of the world is always mild, and the waters hold an uncommon richness of marine life. This is where the cold and warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet and mix. You are likely to see big schools of common dolphins, as well as endangered Bottlenose and shy Humpback dolphins, as well as the resident Orca and Bryde's whales and the migratory Humpback and Southern Right whales (the whale season has just started!) It's also the only place in the world where the rare Tropical Beaked whale has been found. Many elevated look-out points offer excellent land-based whale watching, and marine safaris provide the chance to see these gentle giants at closer quarters.
Don't miss the Nelson Bay Cave in the Robberg Nature Reserve, where the Nelson Bay Cave is to be found. This is an archaeological site with evidence of human habitation that dates back more than 120 thousand years.
Discover the world of monkeys, lemurs, gibbons and other primates at the Monkeyland sanctuary, and find out about the plight of the African Elephant as you meet the rescued animals that now live in a controlled, free range environment at the Knysna Elephant Park.
Visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, a unique 150ha private reserve, embraces the whole western head of Knysna, one of South Africa's Natural Heritage Sites, embraced by the world famous landmarks, the spectacular Knysna Heads (2 giant sandstone cliffs which mark the Knysna River's entrance). It is home to 2 of the Garden Route's icons, namely the Knysna Loerie and the Blue Duiker, one of Africa's smallest antelope species. Other wildlife found on the Reserve include the Cape Mountain Tortoise, Blue Crane South Africa's national bird, rare Black African Oyster Catcher, White breasted Cormorant and Bushbuck to name a few. Guests can enjoy the tranquility of the area, while picnicking under Milkwood Trees with sightings of the elusive and brightly coloured Knysna Loerie. Relax with peaceful walks amid indigenous Fynbos and enjoy visits to the 'Beachcomber' caves, while discovering the secrets of Coffin Bay.
Enjoy the fine art, the craft route, museums, great shopping and excellent restaurants, not to mention Knysna's most famous export, fresh oysters grown in the Knysna Lagoon. A visit to Knysna is a great adventure, and it has been voted South Africa's favourite town.
Return late this afternoon.
Overnight at Lake Pleasant Living.
Day 09: After a very enjoyable experience at the coast, you are headed inland again today, to continue with your safari - this time you will have a very different experience at the world-famous five star private game reserve, Shamwari!
Join the list of rich and famous people who have loved this exclusive place - including John Travolta, Brad Pitt and Prince Charles and his sons!
Shamwari will give you a very different safari experience to the one you enjoyed at Sanbona - equally appealing but instead of being in a semi-desert environment, you're now in a sub-tropical environment with a very different bio-diversity!
Shamwari Private Game Reserve
The Shamwari Game Reserve is Africa's most successful conservation project stretching across 18,000 hectares of land and spanning 5 ecosystems. Not only will you experience nature this close and in their natural surroundings but also pamper yourself in Shamwari's luxurious accommodations and facilities. It has received numerous international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for three consecutive years. Shamwari is steeped in settler history, and dates back to the time when game roamed freely in the Eastern Cape.. This private Game Reserve is malaria free and situated on the Garden Route of South Africa and only 40 minutes by road from Port Elizabeth.
Shamwari Game Reserve offers the guest a 'safari of a lifetime'. It is home to over 5,000 animals such as lions, leopards, buffaloes, black and white rhinos, elephants, hippos, and antelopes. A Wildlife Department and full-time Anti Poaching Unit ensure that Shamwari's conservation efforts remain in ecological balance with nature. Khaya Lendaba, the African Arts Culture Village, is a vibrant depiction of the various African cultures.
The Suites and Lodges at Shamwari offer five-star, ethnically decorated, fully air-conditioned, beautifully appointed, luxury living along with panoramic views of the Game Reserve. The 6 different luxury Lodges also include a small gym, sauna, wine cellar, curio shop and swimming pool with sunken cocktail bar.
Shamwari has five different Lodges to choose from. Our personal favourite is the luxurious tented camp, Bayethe:
Shamwari Bayethe Lodge
Bayethe Lodge in the heart of Shamwari reserve is built with stone walls and thatched roofs. Highlights are relaxing on the viewing deck, overlooking the river pools where many species of animals and birds come to drink. It is easy to forget that there is more to the world when you are relaxing around the fireplace, with the gentle humming and chirruping of crickets as the background accompaniment.
As with all lodges in Shamwari, Bayethe Lodge offers the ultimate in luxury, although offering tented accommodation. Each of the 9 twin-bedded rooms is nestled along the bed of the river and camouflaged under trees allowing ample privacy and unsurpassed comforts. Each tented toom is air-conditioned and heated and has an en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, private plunge pool and viewing deck. Early morning and evening game viewing drives in open land rovers as well as guided nature walks and bird watching are all part of this magnificent experience.
Day 10: This morning you have another very early wake-up call, and following coffee and tea, depart on the early morning game drive.
Return to Bayethe for breakfast, after which you are at leisure to relax by the pool and enjoy the wonderful African sun! If you're feeling energetic, you can join the armed game rangers for a safari walk.
After late afternoon tea and coffee, it's time for the evening game drive and sundowners in the bush.
Dinner and overnight at Bayethe.
Day 11: After a final early morning game drive and breakfast, you'll sadly check out of Shamwari, as your Cape and Safari Tour unfortunately comes to an end!
Your drive to Port Elizabeth Airport will take just over one hour, and as you arrive, you'll leave your car at the Hertz Car Rental depot.
We guarantee that this will be one of the most incredible experiences of your life - and we hope to welcome you back to experience more of wonderful South Africa soon!
